This pressure cooker is my new best friend. Soup prepared from start to finish in less than half an hour, including chopping? Check.
I’ve developed a new food blog obsession. As I’m resting and recuperating (again, thank you all for your support and well wishes!!) I’m enjoying a little food day-dreaming. In these aimless quests for the delicious, I stumbled across Roost, a blog focused on healthy cooking, specifically using some dietary principals I don’t totally understand, but are supposed to be great for people with Crohn’s disease. (Not something I suffer from, but a few to many folks I know do!) Anyhow, this site has just made me insanely hungry. Whetting my appetite right now are the following recipes:
Um, yum!
Lifehacks: 10 Tips To Make Life Easier
- Pump up the volume by placing your iPhone & iPod in a bowl - the concave shape amplifies the music.
- Bake cupcakes directly in ice-cream cones, so much more fun and easier to eat.
- Freeze Aloe Vera in ice-cube trays for soothing sunburn relief.
- Stop cut apples browning in your child’s lunch box by securing with a rubber band.
- Turn your muffin pan upside down, bake cookie-dough over the top and you have cookie bowls for ice-cream.
- Store bed linen sets inside one of their own pillowcases mean no more hunting through piles for a match.
- Pack shoes inside shower caps to stop dirty soles rubbing on your clothes - you can find them for free in just about every hotel.
- Baby powder gets sand off your skin easily - add it to your beach bag for a quick clean up!
- Find tiny lost items like earrings by putting a stocking over the vacuum hose.
- Make an instant cupcake carrier by cutting crosses into a box lid.
I’ve tried the cupcakes in ice cream cones. So cute and fun.
I love the aloe vera idea, although now I live in a colder climate and don’t need it. Would have loved it as a child.
My new goal: to get a photo up on this wall. One of my college friends is a test cook there. I’d love to surprise her!
Every week, we print your fan-submitted photos and post it up in the Test Kitchen between the walk-in fridge and the pantry. The test cooks love seeing your photos and reading your comments! (A live Instagram snapshot from the Test Kitchen. http://instagr.am/p/WfrGu/)
Important discovery: chocolate coconut milk makes amazing hot cocoa. Welcome to my new beverage of choice for the winter months.
Holy geez. I just learned that using tonic water in jello makes it glow under black light. Not that I’m much of a jello person, but that would be pretty cool to see at a party!
This is a great graphic from the New York Times showing the cost difference between junk food and a home-cooked meal. As a parent, I know that one of the major barriers to eating at home is time. Take-out is so quick! For those of you in a time crunch, check out option #3—this is a super quick meal. You can cook the rice ahead (cooked rice even freezes well!) And the beans are pre-cooked. 15 minutes later and you’ve got a healthy home-cooked meal that is super cheap (and easily can be made vegetarian- or vegan-friendly.)
Is Junk Food Really Cheaper? from article by Mark Bittman in the New York Times.
I’ve always said eating out all the time was ridiculous, unhealthy and expensive.
I’ll choose a home cooked meal over fast food anyday.

Pesto time! What’s your favorite pesto recipe?

I found this walking through the aisles of Whole Foods. Honestly, it is hard to pass by a grain called “freekeh.” But given Whole Foods prices, I couldn’t justify buying this grain based solely on the awesome name.
Freekeh is young durham wheat that has been harvested before it is ripe and then roasted. It is supposedly more nutritious and easier to digest than mature wheat. I guess you use it like you would rice. Have you used freekeh? Help me figure out how to use it!
